How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT in 2027

What OpenAI and Google document, what is only observed, and a 20-minute test to see if ChatGPT names your business. No tool can promise a citation.

By , Founder, Baljia AI

The short answer

You cannot make ChatGPT recommend your business, and anyone who promises it is guessing. OpenAI's own help page says "Placement is not guaranteed." What you can do is smaller and still worth doing: let OpenAI's search crawler reach your site, put correct plain facts on your own pages, earn real mentions elsewhere, and measure where you stand.

This guide separates what is documented from what is only observed, then says what nobody outside OpenAI knows. After that comes a 20-minute test you can run today.

Where we stand. We make Baljia, and we are not writing this from the top of the list. In an outside agency's check on October 26, 2026, ChatGPT did not name Baljia on 14 founder questions, and got its pricing wrong when asked about it directly. For the record, as of October 31, 2026, Starter is $49.99 a month at its launch price, Growth is $99.99 and Scale is $249.99. We read the OpenAI, Google, Perplexity, Anthropic and Microsoft pages listed at the end on October 31, 2026.

Three kinds of claim

Most advice on this topic mixes these together. Keep them apart and you will spend your time better.

What is documented

OpenAI's crawlers

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs, and each setting is independent of the others.

  • OAI-SearchBot finds sites for ChatGPT's search features. Block it and your site drops out of those answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link.
  • GPTBot gathers pages OpenAI may use for model training. Blocking it is a training decision, separate from search.
  • ChatGPT-User visits a page when a person's question calls for it. OpenAI warns that robots.txt may not stop this one, and this agent does not decide what appears in search.

So you can allow search and refuse training. Your robots.txt file would look like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: / # ChatGPT search: allowed

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: / # model training: refused

Text after a # is a comment, and crawlers ignore it. This is an example, not advice to block GPTBot. That is your call as the owner of the content.

OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect for search. Its help page adds a second condition that is easy to miss: your website host or content delivery network must allow traffic from OpenAI's published IP addresses. A correct robots.txt does nothing if a firewall turns the crawler away. If you do not manage this yourself, send your host that exact question.

Google-Extended trips people up. It controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, and Google says it has no effect on inclusion or ranking in Google Search.

Google's stance on AI search

ChatGPT is not Google, but Google publishes far more about this, and owners ask about both.

  • Google sets no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your page just has to be indexed and able to show with a snippet.
  • There is no special schema you need to add.
  • Google Search ignores llms.txt files. Google says they neither help nor harm your visibility in its search.
  • You do not need to chop content into tiny chunks or rewrite it for machines.
  • Seeking fake mentions is not as helpful as it might seem, in Google's view.
  • Indexing and serving are still not guaranteed, even when a page meets every requirement.

Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report that shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Microsoft has a similar AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview since February 2026, which counts citations across Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and select partners. Neither one says it reports on ChatGPT.

What is only observed

These are real patterns, but no vendor has confirmed them as rules. Treat each one as a hypothesis.

Answers change. Ask the same question three times in fresh chats and you will often get different brands. This is why a single screenshot proves nothing, for you or for anyone selling you a report.

Answers lean on other people's pages. Open the Sources panel on an answer and read what it used. Lists, comparison pages and review sites often show up. You can check this for your own category in five minutes, which beats any study.

Agreement may matter. Many marketers believe ChatGPT names brands that several independent sources already describe the same way. That idea comes from reading source panels. OpenAI has not documented it. It is still sensible to act on, because accurate mentions on real sites help you with human buyers as well.

Some crawlers may not run JavaScript. Google warns that not all bots can run it. In December 2024, Vercel reported that the OpenAI and Anthropic crawlers it studied fetched JavaScript files but did not execute them. That report is old, and Vercel sells hosting for server-rendered sites, so check your own pages instead of assuming. Our 30-day plan for AI-built apps shows a simple way to do it.

Research points in a direction. A paper accepted at KDD 2024 reported that its methods could raise visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses, and that results varied by domain. It was a research benchmark, so read it as a hint and not a forecast for your business.

What nobody outside OpenAI knows

  • How brands get picked. OpenAI says results are ranked using multiple factors meant to find relevant, reliable information. It does not list them.
  • Whether a Bing ranking helps. OpenAI says ChatGPT sometimes partners with other search providers, and that section links the privacy policies of Microsoft and Shopify. It does not say a Bing position moves you in ChatGPT.
  • How long content changes take. The 24-hour figure covers robots.txt. Nothing we read gives a timeline for new pages to affect answers.
  • Whether llms.txt does anything for ChatGPT. The OpenAI pages we read do not mention it as a way to be found.
  • How much is personal. OpenAI says saved memories and approximate location can shape a search. Your answer may not match your customer's.

If a consultant quotes a percentage for any of these, ask for the source.

The 20-minute baseline test

You need a browser and a spreadsheet. Run this signed out or in a temporary chat, so your own history does not color the result. If your business is local, put the city in the question, because ChatGPT may otherwise guess from your location.

Set up the sheet (2 minutes). Use these columns:

QuestionRunMentioned?Cited?Others namedWrong facts
Best bookkeeper for a small bakery in Tulsa?1NoNo(names)None

That row is a made-up example. Put the date at the top of the sheet.

Ask about yourself first (3 minutes). Type "What is [brand]?" Then ask "How much does [brand] cost?" Write down every wrong fact. If ChatGPT confuses you with another company, that is your first job, before any other work.

Write your buyer questions (3 minutes). Write 5 questions with no brand in them, in the words a buyer would use. Try "What is the best [type of business] for [type of customer]?" and "What should I use to [job]?" Add more later, up to 10.

Run each question three times (10 minutes). Use a fresh chat each time. Five questions at three runs each gives you 15 answers. If you add questions later, keep the same ones each month so you can compare.

Score it (2 minutes). Record two separate things:

  • Mentioned: your business name appears in the answer.
  • Cited: a link to your own site appears as a source.

Your mention rate is answers that named you divided by total answers. Three of 15 would be 20%. Your citation rate works the same way. Do not blend them. They tell you different things, and 15 answers is a small sample, so this shows direction and not a precise score.

A fix list for this week

  1. Correct your own facts. Put what you do, who it is for, your prices and your location on a plain page, in text and not inside an image.
  2. Check access. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt, confirm OAI-SearchBot is not blocked, and ask your host about the firewall. Our free site check reads your robots.txt rules for the main AI crawlers in a few seconds.
  3. Get indexed. Set up Google Search Console. Add Bing Webmaster Tools too. It is a cheap hedge, not a documented ChatGPT requirement.
  4. Answer one lost question. Pick a question from your test and publish one page that answers it in the first two sentences. Do this for real buyer questions, not for a list of keywords.
  5. Earn real mentions. Ask real customers for reviews where they already leave them. Ask authors of lists in your sources panel to fix wrong facts. Never buy or fake reviews.
  6. Label your own comparisons. If you compare yourself with competitors on your own site, say that you wrote it and that you sell a competing product. US rules at 16 CFR 465.6 bar presenting a site you control as independent reviews.

Then repeat the test once a month with the same questions. Also look in your analytics for visits from chatgpt.com.

Should you buy a tool for this?

Only if it saves you the manual runs. Google says plainly that no outside tool can see inside its ranking or AI systems, and the same logic applies to ChatGPT. A tool can run questions at volume and keep records. It cannot see inside the model.

Baljia, for example, checks what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity say about you and writes pages that answer buyer questions. It applies supported fixes to apps it builds and prepares instructions for any other site, so on a site it did not build, someone still has to make the change. Those apps are web apps, and card checkout into your own payment account is not available yet. It is one option among several in our AI marketing agent shortlist, and our own numbers above show we have not solved this either. You can also run a free SEO and AEO audit on your URL first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Nothing in the OpenAI pages we read offers that. OpenAI does document a crawler for pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT, so ads exist as a separate product, and its help page says placement in search results is not guaranteed.

How soon will my business appear in ChatGPT?

Nobody outside OpenAI can tell you. OpenAI gives about 24 hours for a robots.txt change, and we found no timeline for new content.

Does schema or llms.txt help me get cited?

For Google, no. Google says no special schema is needed and that its search ignores llms.txt. For ChatGPT, the pages we read say nothing either way.

Can any tool guarantee a ChatGPT citation?

No. OpenAI does not offer that guarantee, so no outside tool can. Be wary of anyone who says otherwise.

Should I block GPTBot?

That depends on whether you want your content used for training. OpenAI says the GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot settings are independent, so blocking GPTBot is not the same as opting out of ChatGPT search.

Why does ChatGPT have my prices wrong?

You usually cannot tell for certain. Open the sources on that answer, fix anything wrong on your own site, then ask the owners of outdated pages to update them. OpenAI itself warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.
